The current technological landscape offers a wide array of
tools for creating multimedia which are commonly used
both in academic and public libraries. Not all content is
created alike—the purpose will dictate the tool needed.
The impetus could be manifold: introduction to library
services, resources, and information literacy concepts, how-
to guides, for supplemental and recursive instruction for
face-to-face and distant patrons. They could be podcasts, screencasts, slidecasts,
animations, live action, etc. A well-done engaging project can help online
environments feel more personal. Widespread popularity of library multimedia
creations come with challenges such as—assessment, accessibility issues, time
commitment, and skill and expertise in instructional design and technology. Our
panel comprising of academic librarians, a public librarian, and an instructional
designer will discuss tools, tips and tricks, and best practices. Panelists will
provide practical advice on creating and managing videos and podcasts, as well
as compare and recommend appropriate software (free and subscription based). Attendees will then experiment with various planning tools and multimedia creation software. Space will be limited for this session and attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their laptops for the hands-on portion of this session. If you do not bring one, you may work with others in the group.
