When you talk about information literacy with groups outside of the library, do you sometimes feel like you're speaking a foreign language? This hands-on workshop will address a successful approach to the common challenge of creating engaging and innovative instructional programming in collaboration with the communities we serve. Using an example from our institution, we will discuss how we engaged with values and practices represented in course goals created by the First Year Composition Program as we redesigned information literacy learning outcomes. By making connections between the terminology used in institutional documents and concepts from the ACRL Framework, we found new ways to talk to stakeholders about innovative approaches to teaching information literacy. Our experience is focused on academic libraries, but the work of translating professional guiding documents can apply to all types of libraries. We will address how school and public librarians might approach this type of work using their own sets of standards, such as the AASL Standards and local programming guidelines, to address the needs of their communities. Session participants will develop a checklist of tools and strategies and reflect on opportunities they have to take steps toward change at their own institutions.
